In the Beginning

The now famous "circle-T" logo was adopted by the newly incorporated Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in the 1960's, largely due to its ease of understanding and recognition by residents and visitors alike. The new logo came with new color codes for its subway lines, new graphic schemes for its signage, and, perhaps most significantly, the very first "spider map", easily and efficiently displaying the routes and stations of the system's rapid transit and streetcar lines without the complexities of a traditional map.
